I am in need of a ferrule with a 14mm Id, about 4 inches long for a kite, as light as possible and strong! Anyone have any ideas ?

Been and Queued will probably be cheaper but Metropolis Drachen have them. You could also have a word with Tony Dane (Go Kites) to see if he has any he could to bring down with him at the weekend

Greetings,
Most good model shops stock short lengths of tubing. The one I saw in Norwich had a display box full of tubing all about a foot long in Aluminium Brass and steel. The only tiny problem was it was American and all the sizes were imperial.
Another thought is camping shops often keep replacement tent pole sections with steel ferrules and they are often 12 and 14mm.
How about Sussex Model centre, when I went there with Dave Mitchell they had ferrules.
Regards Dick

They are where we are getting the rest of the order from. They are waiting for a delivery from their suppliers. checking out B&Q today, then its the rest of the world. Imperial may be the way forward as 14mm is as near as 9/16ths as makes no odds. Cheers, Greenman

Greetings Dave & Tony,
It might be worth bearing in mind that 14mm is very big and if there is a lot of strain on the joint aluminium might bend, it would be better in my opinion if rather than glue one end of the ferrule you just fix it with paper masking tape, that way if it bends you can simply take it off and bin it and replace it or try another material.
Once you glue it and it bends you are bug*ered and if you have to saw it off, the spar is then too short and with the cost of 14mm glass it's not a cheap exercise (as by now you have discovered!)
I replaced the 14ft cross spar in my Genki with 12mm carbon cut into three lengths and I bent one of the ferrules when the wind got up and I could not get it down quick enough! Those ferrules were made from the B&Q aluminium tubing and the walls are pretty thin.
You might have to consider steel ferrules if, as I suspect you are, building a monster KAP delta, the extra weight of steel should not matter too much!
Regards Dick.

I use plastic insulation tape, but only EVER tape ferrules in position now, for that very reason.

Greetings Phil,
Isn't it just wonderful to have a ferrule fairy at hand when you need one; or should that be 'feral' fairy!
Regards Dick.

Well done the Ferrule Fairy. You may have saved the day yet again. Bonefish asked first so I think it fair that he has the Stainless one (if thats ok with the Ferrule Fairy). I shall go with the ali one comming from Metropilis Drachen (last one they had) and see how strong it is.
Cheers, Greenman
