I have not been for a few years, but what a great festival this has become over the 20+ years since my very first visit.

We arrived on Wednesday, when it was chilly and windy. Got a bit burnt on the face. After that, the wind dropped and the sun came out. Sunday was wall to wall sunshine but flat calm from about midday onwards. Saturday was firework night of course, and the display was wonderful. The town was packed. I read a report somewhere that it was taking upwards of 3 hours to get out of the car parks, and up to an hour to queue for the loos! Oh am I grateful we have a hotel within 100 yards of the beach! I'm in the process of uploading photos, but there are a lot to sort through, so check back here on Flickr over the next couple of days.

Whilst we had a great week, l have to say that I had the same conversation with several different kite makers/flyers over the course of the week, namely that there wasn't very much that was new or unique and it was very much a display of people's catalogue purchasing power rather than their ability to make their own kites, or even have the imagination to commission something unique if they didn't have the ability to make kites themselves. A notable exception was Karl Longbottom who justifiably won best new kite for his Phoenix kite.

There are occasional gems you just have to search for them our be lucky enough to be there when they are flying. Karl is probably a shining star of originality at the moment.
