A few years ago at Portsmouth Festival, they held a sled altitude sprint. I was rubbish, but thoroughly enjoyed the making and participation. Roy Broadley has kindly allowed me to run a SLED competition at Jolly Up 8 on 16 & 17 April 2011. I would like it to be a way of getting back to kite basics, designing (if you can), making and flying, but most of all, having FUN! Naturally, being a competition, there have to be rules, but like the kites, I have kept them as simple as I can. They are at www.roy-martin.co.uk/SLEDQueries about these rules, or any discussion about the competition, should NOT be directed to Roy or Hayley at Kites Up. This forum thread is the ONLY place for such things, so that everyone has the same opportunity to see them. The rules MIGHT be amended in the light of anything said on this forum, but if they are, I will post a note of the change here. I look forward to seeing your creations!

GREAT Roy, count me in! I have added it to the Jolly Up '8' on the Forum Calendar too.
I never even finished at the last challenge I entered, the Pooh Sticks at Teston, but anticipate wiping out the opposition this time round. ;D ;D ;D

You just stick to globe trotting mate!!! I hear it's back to India in the new year, lucky begger.
Any hints on the initial flying and settling times for this? and would a stack be permitted, or is this classed as a double skin!
well some idiot had to ask!

No stacks, just a single kite, well, some idiot had to tell you! 'Flying and settling times'? What do you think I am? Organised? We'll see what happens on the days. See rule 1

Hello,
I've looked at this comp a few times and I can't help but ask about the size, 40cm seems really small. (queue all sorts of comments)
I know size isn't everything but is 40cm an official sled kite competition size? Or is it possible a junior category :-) I really don't know.
And just to add to my confusion there doesn't seem to be a max width. Would that allow a short length but with a really wide bow? (when does a sled become a para-foil?)
Are some new rules needed? :-)
Don't bite me I'm new at this :-)
Cheers,
Paul.

Sorry for the delay in replying to this post, but life has just been SOOOO hectic in December. Hello, I've looked at this comp a few times and I can't help but ask about the size, 40cm seems really small. (queue all sorts of comments) I know size isn't everything but is 40cm an official sled kite competition size? Or is it possible a junior category :-) I really don't know. There is NOTHING official here, I just wanted the sleds to be easy to make, especially without sewing. It also gives people a chance to experiment and redesign without costing a fortune, and it means everybody is working within the same major limitation. And just to add to my confusion there doesn't seem to be a max width. Would that allow a short length but with a really wide bow? (when does a sled become a para-foil?) There is no width quoted, as this would restrict the design to particular types and I wanted people to experiment with aspect ratio as well. You can make it as wide as you like, but would it fly? A sled becomes a parafoil when I say so (see rule 1) but the maximum length stops this: you cannot do too much clever stuff within 40cm and sticking the sail together. And anyway, rule 9 could be applied: Notwithstanding any of the above, any kite not considered to be within the spirit of the competition may be excluded. Are some new rules needed? :-) Don't bite me I'm new at this :-) Cheers, Paul. I don't think any new rules are needed, and I certainly won't bite! I'm happy with it so far, the ONLY minor change is as a result of kitekrazy's post: this wasn't intended to be JUST a sled altitude sprint, but a kite designing/making/flying competition. I'd like to find a better sled, maybe the best sled, and perhaps I could include a sprint as PART of the overall judging, but I also realised I had left a paragraph out of the introduction, so it is now on the website: Prizes may or may not be awarded for design, construction and decoration, as flight is the most important thing. Judging may be based on any or all of the following: flyability, flying line angle, or an altitude sprint. If I do use an altitude sprint, southern rules would apply, so settling time will be allowed. This competition might also encourage those kite fliers who have not yet made their own kites to have a go, starting with an existing design, and trying to improve it if they can. I am hoping to see some interesting ideas.

So long as you make it, and it's within the maximum length, it's within the rules. Wind away! ;D

I always suspected so, and brave of you to come out! so shouldn't your 'club' sled be [glow=red,2,300]PINK?[/glow] I am still reading the rules, we need to know where the flexi-point is, thus allowing us to bend them.. ;D

Referring to rule 6
Is welding permitted or excluded?
I'm thinking welded polythene (the simple application of heat, no glues chemicals etc) before anyone makes silly comments about metal kites, though Mythbusters did make a lead ballon........

Now, now, Don, it's 2011 tomorrow, peace on earth and goodwill etc... oh, and batteries not included Roy B ran the beer lift, I volunteered for this, so you play it my way, I'm afraid Don't see why heat welding shouldn't be allowed, unless there are strong views to the contrary. I'll confirm next year ;D
