A suggestion more suited to you: go to the dump and intercept someone throwing away an internal door. They are usually thin hardboard with egg box middles which I'm sure you could take apart!
Or post a wanted for same on Freegle/Freecycle.

I use 2mm thick MDF which you can cut with a stanley knife, it comes in 8x4 sheets and costs a few pounds available from most good DIY stores.
sorry Collin its not free you have to pay for it.
