I know most Kite Weekenders get a nose bleed if they venture north of Watford, but the SkyBums festival in the quaint Shropshire town of Cleobury Mortimer was well worth a visit this weekend. It was a very social event and while a lot of you were cooling down and bathing in a paddling pool at Sumners Ponds, Mad Pixie, Surfski, Sandra & Ernie and a few others were having a our own form of wet weekend. The views were fantastic and we could watch the big black rainclouds come rolling in over Clee Hill. The winds on Saturday were fabulous and we all managed to get a lot of kites flying. We had a bit of a party on Saturday night and sat around laughing our socks off. I’d bought the Lidl Easy Flyer and their twinline version of their flowtail which, with a little help from a few friends, we rebridled as a single line and it went straight up and stuck to the sky. Lovely little flyer. Sunday we had no wind so spent a lot of time socialising. The sunsets were fabulous and the owl hooting above my van was quite an experience. All the rain had turned the entrance into a quagmire and getting out was quite an experience. I took a run at it and didn’t get stuck (phew) and missed the gatepost (double phew). A great time was had by all..

Was at a stag weekend in York, otherwise I would have probably found my way up there. Certainly would have been alot cheaper!

Lovely little flyer. My flowtail flew very well on the beach last Sunday in clean winds once I tweaked the bridle and used better 30m lines. Yeah its a stunt kite but its a bit slow to turn. Ideal for beginners and kids getting into two line kites.

Here, here - what Jill says sums it up really well - it was a superb weekend, and Santa and I thoroughly enjoyed it: it had everything - great site, fun people, alcohol (kept nicking Paul of Skybums drinks!), bag raffle (Santa won a red t-shirt!!) flew a lot of kites, great site...wonderful sunset with a good friend...yeah , would certainly go again - hope there is one next year. Flew our mega delta with new smiley face line laundry, which was fun. Helped somebody get a truly wonderful kite re-sparred...not sure why I did it, as I think she would have sold me the kite as it wasn't flying well...so more fool me! BUT it's her kite, and I hope it flies really well at Portsmouth. Missing Portsmouth....strange not to be there...Santa and Mad Pixie

I few it at Portsmouth in a good wind. Even with the lines not fully extended the line drag was shocking. It needed the wind to be strong to make a turn and that needed a lot of effort considering the kite size. When the wind dropped a little completing a loop was difficult. On the other hand with the lines just held at the same length it went up very high and just sat there so I'm sure when converted to single line it's going to be fine.

That Shropshire Kite Festival looks interesting. Shropshire is one of my favourite counties. I love Shrewsbury, Bridgnorth, Ludlow and Ironbridge in particular. It is a fact that we get more campers and caravanners at our Cardigan Island Coastal Farm Park camp-site from Shropshire than from any other part of Britain....even Wales ! We are at Gwbert, Cardigan, 38 miles south of Aberystwyth, which links well through the Cambrian Mountains to Welshpool and Shropshire.[ Lovely scenery en route !] We had the editor of the Shrewsbury Chronicle camp with us 3 years ago.Our place would be ideal for Kite flyers from the Shropshire area. I need to get to that festival to see what it is all about.
