Greetings Kitists,
Yesterday Batchoy (Guy) Jo Brand (Jill) Altitudeman (Scott) and I attended Hunstanton Kite Festival. This is a one day event held in conjunction with a Vintage Car Rally/Display.
The day started with torrential rain and a clap or two of thunder at 0900hrs but this soon passed and left a warm humid day unfortunately with very little wind; during the first couple of hours only the Federviehs of Guy and I would stay up, even my featherweight roller was not light enough.
The wind picked up to about 5mph by lunchtime and we were all able to fly several lightweight kites.
The low wind did have one advantage which for me proved a most enlightening experience, Bryan Cantle (Dark Star) was there and apart from his three kite routine which he performed superbly with a trio of homemade featherweight kites he gave a demo of helicopter flying in the main arena.
Bryan just amazed me he flew all the way around the arena and performed all sorts of acrobatic stunts including full loops and inverse flying. He flew the helicopter upside down for at least 20 yds and was able to make it fly higher and lower whilst upside down!
What is truly amazing is that Bryan has only been flying helicopters for 2 years! I am not particularly surprised that he has reached this level as quickly as he is extremely dedicated and I know that with his three kite routine he practices virtually every day.
I notice on his website that he is at Portsmouth and Bristol this year; I do hope that he is able to do the helicopter demo there. I did ask him if he had been taking lessons from Eric but to my amazement he didn't even know him! Well even if Bryan does not know Eric he really can fly both The Hohnlich Pass and The Radical Schwitger! (Is it not just amazing how these things come back to bite your ar*e)
Team Spectrum as usual also put on a good display in spite of the light wind.
At about 1600hrs when the festival was nearly at an end the wind got up and conditions were nearly perfect but by then many of the public had started to drift away.
All in all a very pleasant and enlightening day.
Regards
Dick
