Second year of this brilliant, entertaining and cheap weekend! I for one would gladly pay to see the air show but would never get to camp on the airfield for both days of the show, with all the benefits that brings. So firstly a big thank you to Big John for the invite, VIP passes and arranging it all for us the humble ‘kitestist’ amongst some of the best airmen in the world and millions of pounds worth of aircraft.
Arriving at 10.30pm (sorry, 22.30 hrs) Friday evening I was in time to just go to sleep! This late arrival meant a full day to see all the flying on Saturday which was spectacular and well orchestrated with many of the larger aircraft arriving to display from the Bournemouth Air Show, or en-route to Bournemouth. The air show commenced at 10 with the marching bands of the Air Cadets and a display of snatching up the banner ‘welcome to Shoreham’ by an ex crop dusting tow plane. Static aircraft displays, traders and a bit of everything thrown in to make this a real family day out with something for everyone. There never was a quiet moment till 5pm (woops, 17.00hrs) when the show finished with a microlite and 15 Canada Geese that were duped from birth to believe the pilot was their daddy! This was not a gimmick but aconversationalist*conservationist Frenchman who was seriously researching bird behaviour, migration etc. but was entertaining none the less.
Greenman had me at it again, with challenges of “£10 to GOSH” if I got into the cockpit of one of the Blades Teams Extra300 aircraft, and then get a Brietling wing walker girl into my camper … with photographs, needless to say he paid up with a smile on his face, cheers Dave.
We were there only to display LED kites at sunset on Saturday from the VIP area, and assembled ourselves and kites in daylight and watched the sun set and wind drop to zero, even though we had the whole landing strip at our disposal and attempting to launch a couple of times we frustratingly resigned ourselves to a static display. Of course the LED Canard came out for two hours of ‘kite’ flying when nothing else could and saved a bit of kudos.
Sunday was a repeat of Saturday, crikey I forgot…Saturday was HOTTER than India and I and others had to hide out of the blistering sun, but I was glad it was a bit more overcast on Sunday with a high cloud base and the show was as entertaining as the day before, but cloaked by the sad news that came through of the Red Arrows pilot who died after crashing his aircraft at Bournemouth after displaying at the Bournemouth air show yesterday. All the flags at Shoreham were flown at half mast.
Click on any of the pictures below for a better account of the rest of the air show:
Thanks Dick, once again I stand corrected!

Thanks for disliking me Dave Bonefish
